As a child, I spent summers and autumn with my Grandparents in the country. My very poor, tough Hester Street grandfather had become a gentleman farmer. I would work in the garden with him picking potatoes. I still remember the sun on my shoulders and the awe of digging dry brown dirt and finding carrots and potatoes.
